MeL eResources for Kids

The Michigan eLibrary, managed by the Library of Michigan and local libraries, offers free online access to full-text articles, books, digital images, and research resources for all Michigan residents, along with a user-friendly interlibrary loan system for borrowing materials from participating libraries. Many of the databases can be integrated with your Google Drive.

Elementary Learning Resources

  • Britannica School provides information on countries, animals, and people. Watch and learn with videos, games, and activities. (Grades 3-6)

  • Explora for Elementary Schools provides content from children's magazines, easy-to-read encyclopedia entries, and images. Students can learn about animals, musicians, fitness, space exploration, and much more. Pulls content from Middle Search Plus, Primary Search, Newspaper Source Plus, and the eBook K-8 Collection. (Grades 3-6)

  • Pebble Go is an early literacy learning tool that includes animals (including dinosaurs) and social studies.
    Easy-to-navigate visual interface
    for emerging readers. (Grades PreK-3)

  • Learning Express School Center provides resources for all ages. Scroll down and click on the link “Grades 4-8 Educator Resources,” then select “Elementary School” or "Middle School” for Mathematics skills or English skills. "Middle School" includes Social Studies and high school test prep. Register for a free account to save your work. (Grades 4 and up)

  • World Book Kids offers easy-to-read content for elementary school learners. Hundreds of activities, science projects and experiments. (Grades PreK-5)

  • World Book Early Learning  follows Trek and Taffy the cat around the world. Share their love of colors, numbers, and other fun things. Come inside for stories and pictures. (Grades PreK-3)

  • EBSCO eBooks K-8  includes full text, full image books that support K-8 students across all subject areas.  Also features a selection of teacher resources to support educators and administrators. You may access the full text of these eBooks from your computer, or download titles to most popular portable devices.

  • MeLCat gives all Michigan residents access to millions of books available from 400+ Michigan libraries with your local library card.

  • NoveList K-8 Plus helps you find just the right book by subject, age, awards won, books made into movies, and much more. Read reviews and learn about the author. Create your own reading wish list.

Middle School Learning Resources

  • Biography Reference Center offers more than 450,000 biographies. Includes complete full text of Biography Today and Biography Magazine as well as thousands of narrative biographies. (grades 7 and up)

  • Britannica School Includes over 132,000 encyclopedia articles, 103,000 images, 7,500 multimedia elements, more than 27,000 eBooks, and novels and essays. Tools include translation for 50+ languages and read-aloud functionality. (Grades 6-8)

  • Explora for Middle Schools includes magazines and reference books for middle school students. Includes thousands of biographies and primary source documents. Subjects include history, current events, science, sports, and biographies. Also includes photos, maps, and flags; and pulls content from Middle Search Plus, Primary Search, Newspaper Source Plus, and the eBook K-8 Collection.

  • Gale Opposing Viewpoints provides different views about issues that help students develop critical thinking skills. This resource brings balance and perspective to contemporary issues using arguments from experts. (grades 7 and up)
