TBC (TEEN BOOK CLUB) meets each Wednesday from 4:00 – 5:00 pm beginning  September 29.  Each attending TBC member gets a free “get-to-keep-it” copy of the featured book.  Our first selection this fall will be the biography Highest Duty by Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the pilot who landed US Airways flight 1549 safely on the Hudson River saving the lives of all 155 people aboard.  At TBC we read, have conversations, and do book related projects as well as a community service project.  No registrations is necessary.  Questions?  Contact Youth Services Librarian Jennifer Tice at 273-8666.

PRESCHOOL STORYTIME meets each Tuesday from 10:30 – 11:30 am.  Games, science, music, and dance enrich the story experience.  Preschool Storytime targets 3 – 5 year olds, but we welcome children a little younger and a little older.  Parents, grandparents, and caretakers participate with children for this family friendly storytime.  The third Tuesday of September, October, and November features professional children’s music educator Colleen Yonge.  No registration.  Just bring your listening ears and smiles!  Questions may be directed to Jennifer Tice, Youth Services Librarian at 273-8666.

PARK AND READ PROGRAM   Back for a second summer, the DNRE and the Library of Michigan are again offering Park & Read at more than 400 libraries across Michigan.  Park & Read allows library card-holders the ability to “check-out” a one-day pass into any Michigan state park or recreation area in lieu of the resident daily motor vehicle permit.  This $6 savings also provides free access to the more than 500 events taking place in state parks throughout the summer.  For those interested in bringing along a library book for serious beach reading, 71 of the state parks have hammocks available for Park & Read users to borrow while on-site for the day so they can fully enjoy a great book in Michigan’s great outdoors.  Passes are valid for seven days from check-out and can be used for one day at any one of Michigan’s 98 state parks.  Passes are valid for day-use only.  The program is available through October 1, 2010.  For more information on the program and a complete list of participating libraries, hammock availability, and park events taking place throughout the state, visit www.michigan.gov/stateparks.

The Three Rivers Public Library has joined MelCat, a centralized union catalog with up-to-date holdings from 179 (39 academic, 115 public, 19 K-12, 2 special) participating libraries.  Twenty-four million items (7.5 million unique bibliographic records) are available in the MeLCat database.  If a book a patron wants is checked out or not owned by this library, the patron can use MeLCat to request that it be sent to the Three Rivers Public Library for pickup.  The MeLCat database is available through the library website at www.threeriverslibrary.org (select the Interlibrary Loan button) or via the library online catalogs located near the circulation desk.

The Three Rivers Public Library offers internet access for persons with wireless-enabled portable computers.  Use of WiFi access to the internet is governed by the library’s Internet Policy.

READING TUTOR VOLUNTEERS FOR ADULTS NEEDED:  THE ST. JOSEPH COUNTY LITERACY COUNCIL has opportunities for adults interested in helping other adults learn to read.  No previous teaching education or experience is necessary.  All you need is a desire to help others and an hour or two per week available to meet with an adult student at the library.  The St. Joseph County Literacy Council sponsors one-on-one tutoring to teach adult students to read, write, and speak English.  The council coordinates matching volunteer tutors with adult students.  The council provides material for training tutors as well as learning materials for the students.  The St. Joseph County Literacy Council is funded by the St. Joseph County United Way.  The Three Rivers Public Library provides a home for the literacy council, and the library receives phone calls to connect potential tutors and students with the literacy council’s coordinator.  Adults interested in learning more about possibly becoming a volunteer tutor with the St. Joseph County Literacy Council are invited to call the Three Rivers Public library at 273-8666 to talk to Shirley Cody, Literacy Council Liaison.

BE A READING TUTOR/LEARN TO READ ENGLISH:  The St. Joseph County Literacy Council, with support from the St. Joseph County United Way, offers free, one-to-one English reading instruction.  To become involved as a tutor, board member, or student call Shirley Cody, Library-Literacy Council Liaison, at the library at 273-8666.
